English Cocker Spaniels are active, alert sporting dogs that love to please their owners. The breed is alive with energy. His gait is strong and smooth, and capable both of covering ground effortlessly and penetrating dense cover to flush and retrieve game. The English Cocker Spaniel was bred as a hunting dog. His eagerness in the field and the nonstop action of his tail while at work indicate how much he enjoys hunting.
They are medium size dogs that are solid, but not bulky. Their head characteristically includes long ears, wide jaw, flattened skull, wide nostrils, and dark oval eyes. Their hair is medium length, except on the head, where it is short and fine. The English Cocker Spaniel's body is compact with a deep chest and a short back. The tail is docked and carried horizontally. Depending on the color of their coat, the nose of the English Cocker Spaniel is either brown or black. Breeders prefer black noses. English Cocker Spaniels flourish with human company and should not be left alone for long periods of time.

The English Cocker Spaniel is a happy and loving dog, of equable disposition. They are neither lethargic nor hyperactive, a willing worker and a loyal and engaging companion. The English Cocker is playful, yet gentle with children. It is important that an English Cocker Spaniel is not exposed to teasing, as they do not endure it well. They are excellent companion dogs. Most English Cocker Spaniels are very outgoing dogs, but occasionally an individual is reserved. The breed lines are a major factor in determining individual temperament.
Overall, males tend to be the most cooperative. Some females are very dominant and it is important that their owner be assertive. English Cocker Spaniels are rather easy to train. However, they are sensitive, so it is important they be trained gently, but firmly. Typically, an English Cocker Spaniel gets along well with other pets.
The smaller spaniels were developed initially to hunt the woodcock, which is where the name Cocker was derived. The English Cocker is a bit larger and a bit more hound like in the head than his American cousin, and is considerably less popular in the United States.
Height: Males are usually 16 to 17 inches; females are about 15 - 16 inches.
Weight: Males weigh from 28 to 34 pounds; females are 26 to 32 pounds.
Litter Size: 3 - 8 puppies.
Life Span: English Cocker Spaniels live for about 12 - 15 years.
