English Cocker Spaniels - History
English Cocker Spaniels are a very old breed. There was a variety of Spaniels as early as 1300. Each breed was good at its own field. Some dogs were best suited for hunting waterfowl, others --- small game. Cockers were best in hunting the woodcock, hence the name of the breed.
The dogs were distinguished by size. Those that weighed under 25 lbs were called Cockers. The dogs over 25 lbs were usually referred to as Field Spaniels. This system was not very reliable when judging the dogs. Therefore, it was decided to judge the dogs by type rather than weight. Spaniels were divided into seven different breeds, one of them being the Cocker Spaniel. Until 1892, when the Kennel Club of England recognized them as separate breeds, the Cocker and Springer Spaniel were developed together. Then, in 1946, the American and Canadian Kennel Clubs recognized the American and English Cocker Spaniel as separate breeds.
Nowadays, the American Cocker Spaniel is more popular in the United States. The English Cocker Spaniel is popular in Europe and elsewhere. This is due to the fact that the English Cocker Spaniel has preserved its working qualities. English Cocker Spaniels can be used in hunting and make good family pets.
